How to compress a video in 3 steps

  1. Choose your video

Drop a file onto the page or tap "Choose videos". MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and other common formats all work.

  2. Pick how small

Keep "Recommended" for a good balance, type an exact size in MB, or choose a preset such as Discord or email.

  3. Compress and download

Your browser does the work on your own device. When it finishes, compare the sizes and download the MP4.

Compress a video to an exact file size

Many apps and email services cap how big an attachment can be. Choose Target file size, type the number of megabytes you need, and the compressor works out the right bitrate from your video's length.

Short clips keep plenty of detail. Long recordings squeezed into a small size have to give up more, so trim away the parts you don't need first. Whole numbers from 1 to 65,536 MB are accepted, and anything outside that range is corrected for you.

Will compression lower the quality?

Compression always trades some detail for a smaller file, but most of the savings come from information your eyes barely notice. Recommended mode keeps the picture as close to the original as it can while still cutting the size substantially.

Lowering the resolution is often the most effective change. A 4K phone recording saved at 1080p looks almost identical on a phone or laptop screen, yet the file can shrink to a fraction of its size.

Works with MP4, MOV and many other formats

Open MP4, MOV (including most iPhone recordings), WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, M4V, 3GP, MPEG and TS files. Every result is saved as an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, the combination that plays on almost every phone, computer, browser and TV.

The fastest path uses your browser's built-in video encoder, which on most devices is hardware-accelerated. Formats the browser can't read natively are handled by a slower fallback engine, so they still work.

Sized right for Discord, email and messaging apps

Every platform sets its own limit, so pick the mode that matches where your video is going:

  • Discord: free accounts can upload files up to 20 MB. The Discord preset aims for exactly that.
  • Email: Gmail accepts attachments up to 25 MB, and other providers set similar limits. The email preset keeps your video under 25 MB.
  • WhatsApp and other messengers: these apps recompress videos you send, which often makes them blurry. Compressing the video yourself first lets you choose the balance between size and quality.

Your videos never leave your device

Most online compressors upload your file to a server, process it there and send it back. VideosCompressor works differently: the compression runs inside your browser, using your own device's processor and, where available, its hardware video encoder.

Your video is never uploaded, so nobody else can view it, store it or use it for anything. There is no upload or download wait either: the only file that moves is the finished MP4 you save.

Frequently asked questions

Is this video compressor really free?

Yes. Every feature is free to use, with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many videos you compress. The site is funded by a small number of clearly labelled ads.

Are my videos uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs inside your browser, on your own device. Your video is never sent to us or to anyone else, which is also why there is no upload wait.

How large a video can I compress?

Because the work happens on your device, the limit depends on its memory. Most computers handle files of 1–2 GB, and most phones manage files up to about 500 MB. If a file looks too large for your device, the compressor warns you before it starts.

How do I compress a video to a specific size in MB?

Choose Target file size and type the number of megabytes you need, for example 10 or 20. The compressor calculates the bitrate from your video's length so the result lands close to that size.

Which video formats can I compress?

You can open MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, M4V, 3GP, MPEG and TS files. Every compressed video is saved as an MP4 (H.264 video with AAC audio).

Will the compressed video play on my phone?

Yes. MP4 with H.264 and AAC is the most widely supported video format. It plays on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, smart TVs and in every modern browser without extra software.

Why does a long video look blurry after compressing it to a small size?

The available data is shared across every second of the video. A 10-minute video squeezed into 25 MB gets only about 340 kilobits per second, which is too little for sharp, detailed images. Trim the video, lower the resolution, or choose a larger target size for a cleaner result.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in an up-to-date version of Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Samsung Internet. Phones compress more slowly than computers, so keep the page open and the screen on until the download is ready.
