How to compress a video for email

  1. Add your video

Drop the video here or tap "Choose videos". Phone recordings, screen captures and camera files all work.

  2. Keep the email preset

It aims for 24 MB, just under Gmail's 25 MB limit. Lower the target if your recipient's service is stricter.

  3. Attach and send

Download the MP4 and attach it to your email like any other file.

Email attachment limits, simply explained

Email wasn't designed for large files, so providers cap attachments. Gmail allows 25 MB per message, counted before encoding. When a larger file is attached, Gmail turns it into a Google Drive link instead.

The email preset targets 24 MB, so the attachment fits Gmail's limit with a little margin. If you're sending to a work address or don't know the recipient's provider, choose Target file size and enter 15 to be safe.

What fits in an email

Typical results with the email preset (24 MB) for a 1080p, 30 fps video with sound:

Video length Resolution chosen Looks
1 minute 1080p Sharp
2 minutes 720p Sharp
5 minutes 480p Good
10 minutes 360p Soft

An attachment is easiest for the recipient: it's in their inbox and works offline. A cloud link handles any size but depends on the recipient opening an external page, and the link may expire.

Compress and attach when the video is up to a few minutes long. Use a link for long recordings, and compress them anyway, so they download faster.

Private all the way

Your video is compressed by your own browser and is never uploaded to us. Only you decide where it goes next.

Frequently asked questions

What's the largest video I can email?

Gmail lets you send up to 25 MB of attachments in one message, measured before the email is encoded for sending. Many other email services set limits around 20–25 MB, and some company mail servers accept less.

Why does my email bounce even though the video is under 25 MB?

Attachments grow by roughly a third when an email is encoded for delivery. Some receiving servers count that encoded size, so a 24 MB video can arrive as about 33 MB and be refused. If that happens, compress to 15 MB and resend.

How long can a video be to fit in an email?

Around 2 minutes at 720p, or 5 minutes at 480p, fits in 24 MB. Short clips of a minute or less keep full HD.

Can I send several videos in one email?

The 25 MB limit applies to all attachments together. To send three videos, give each one a target of about 7 MB, or send them in separate emails.

What if my video is too long to fit?

Trim it to the part that matters, or send a share link from a cloud storage service instead. Our guide on emailing large videos compares the options.
