FFmpeg and the GNU General Public License
The Video Compressor's compatibility engine is FFmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly by the ffmpeg.wasm project (@ffmpeg/core). This build includes the x264 H.264 encoder and is therefore distributed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later (GPL-2.0-or-later).
In line with the GPL:
- The engine is delivered to your browser unmodified, exactly as published by the ffmpeg.wasm project.
- The complete corresponding source code, including build scripts, is available at the ffmpeg.wasm repository, release tag v12.15, which published
@ffmpeg/core0.12.10: github.com/ffmpegwasm/ffmpeg.wasm/tree/v12.15. - FFmpeg's own source is available at ffmpeg.org, and x264's at videolan.org.
- The full license text is available at gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html.
- If you'd prefer to receive the source code from us, write to us through the contact page and we'll send it to you, or a link to it, at no charge for at least three years from the date you used the engine.
The GPL applies to the FFmpeg engine itself. It's loaded only when a video needs it, as a separate program running in your browser.
Other licenses
- MPL-2.0 (Mediabunny and its AAC encoder): we use the published code without changes, only minified for faster delivery. The source code for the exact version listed above is available from the linked repository.
- Apache-2.0 (PDF.js, jSquash codecs, wasm-feature-detect), MIT (pdf-lib, fflate, OxiPNG, qcms) and BSD (MozJPEG, libwebp, libavif, OpenJPEG, the PDFium JBIG2 decoder): permissive licenses that require attribution, which this page provides.
- SIL Open Font License 1.1 (Inter, Plus Jakarta Sans, Noto Sans JP, Noto Sans Arabic, Noto Sans Devanagari, Noto Sans Bengali, Noto Sans Thai, Noto Sans KR, Noto Sans SC): the fonts used on this site.
Each project's full license text is available in its repository.
