How to compress a video for Discord

  1. Add your clip

Drop your recording onto the page. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files from OBS, phones and consoles all work.

  2. Keep the Discord preset

It aims for just under 20 MB. Nitro users can switch to "Target file size" and enter 50 or 500.

  3. Upload to Discord

Download the MP4 and drag it into your Discord chat. It plays directly in the channel.

Discord's upload limits

Account Maximum file size
Free 20 MB
Nitro Basic 50 MB
Nitro 500 MB

The Discord preset targets the free limit. The compressor works out the bitrate from your clip's length, adds a small safety margin, and makes sure the final file never goes over. If you have Nitro, choose Target file size and type your own limit for even better quality.

How long can a 20 MB clip be?

These are typical results with the Discord preset for a 1080p, 30 fps recording. The compressor lowers the resolution automatically when a clip is too long to stay sharp at full size.

Clip length Resulting quality
30 seconds 1080p, very sharp
1 minute 720p, sharp
2 minutes 480p, good on phones
5 minutes 360p, watchable
10 minutes 360p, noticeably soft

For long recordings, consider splitting them into highlights or sharing a link instead.

Tips for great-looking Discord clips

  • Cut to the action. Trimming a 3-minute recording to the 40 seconds that matter makes a huge difference in quality.
  • Lower the frame rate for long clips. 30 fps is plenty for most clips over half a minute.
  • Reduce game audio if you don't need it. In the advanced settings, set audio to 64 kbps or remove it, and the video gets the extra data.
  • Record efficiently. If you capture with OBS or a similar tool, recording at a lower bitrate saves you a compression step later.

Nothing gets uploaded

Your clips are compressed on your own computer or phone, not on our servers. That makes it faster, since there's no upload wait, and private: no one else ever sees your video.

Frequently asked questions

What is Discord's file size limit?

Since August 2026, free accounts can upload files up to 20 MB (it was 10 MB before). Nitro Basic raises the limit to 50 MB and Nitro to 500 MB. Discord occasionally tests different limits, so check the upload error message if a file is refused.

Why is my clip blurry after compressing it for Discord?

A long video has to share 20 MB across every second. A 30-second clip gets plenty of data, but a 5-minute clip gets very little. Trim the clip to the moment that matters, and the compressor can keep it sharp.

Will the video play inside Discord?

Yes. The result is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which Discord plays in the chat on desktop, web and mobile.

What about 60 fps gameplay?

Fast games look smoother at 60 fps, but every extra frame uses data. For clips longer than about 30 seconds, setting the frame rate to 30 in the advanced settings usually looks better at 20 MB, because each frame gets more detail.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The compressor runs in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android. Nothing is uploaded and there's no account.
