Privacy and safety
Are my files uploaded to your servers?
No. All compression happens in your web browser, on your own device. Your videos, images and PDFs are never sent to us or to anyone else. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page and its compression engine have loaded.
Do you keep copies of my files?
No. We never receive your files, so there is nothing to keep. When you close the tab, the compressed files disappear from your browser's memory too.
Is the site safe to use for private documents?
Your files stay on your device, which makes this one of the most private ways to compress them. As with any website, keep your browser up to date. Read how it works for the technical details.
Do you remove location data from photos and videos?
Yes, by default. Metadata such as GPS location, device model and dates is removed. You can choose to keep it in the advanced settings.
Using the compressors
Is VideosCompressor really free?
Yes. All three compressors are free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The site is funded by a small number of clearly labelled ads.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Everything works in a modern browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android.
Which browsers are supported?
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Samsung Internet. Chrome and Edge are usually fastest for video, because they make the most of your device's hardware video encoder.
Can I compress several files at once?
Yes. Add as many files as you like; they're processed one after another with the same settings. When they're done, you can download them individually or all together as a ZIP file.
Why does the page ask me to wait when I leave it?
If you close or reload the tab while a file is being compressed, the work is lost. The browser asks you to confirm so you don't lose it by accident.
Limits and file sizes
What's the largest file I can compress?
There's no fixed limit, because nothing is uploaded. The limit is your device's memory. Most computers handle videos of 1–2 GB; phones are best with files under about 500 MB. The compressor warns you before starting a file that looks too large for your device.
How do I compress a file to an exact size?
Choose Target file size in the video or image compressor and enter the size you need, in MB for videos or KB for images. The compressor calculates the settings that fit.
Why is my compressed video bigger than the target I set?
It shouldn't be; the compressor retries with lower settings when a result is too large. With extremely detailed footage at a tiny target, it may not be possible to reach the size. Try a lower resolution, a bigger target or a shorter clip.
Why didn't my file get smaller?
Some files are already well compressed. If the new file wouldn't be smaller, you'll see a message, and for PDFs we give you your original back. For images, converting to WebP or AVIF often helps.
Formats and quality
Which formats are supported?
Videos: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV, FLV, M4V, 3GP, MPEG and TS, saved as MP4. Images: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, still GIF and HEIC where your browser can open it. Documents: PDF.
Will compression reduce quality?
Compression always trades some detail for size, but the default settings keep the difference very hard to see. Use a higher quality setting if you need it, and read compressing without visible quality loss.
Why are all compressed videos saved as MP4?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio plays on practically every phone, computer, TV and website. It's the safest format for sharing.
Can I compress animated GIFs?
Not yet. The Image Compressor handles still images only, and tells you when a GIF is animated.
