How to compress a MOV file

  1. Add your MOV

Drop the MOV file onto the page or tap "Choose videos". On iPhone, pick it from Photos or Files.

  2. Choose how small

Keep "Recommended" for a smaller file that looks the same, or set a target size in MB.

  3. Download the MP4

The compressed video is saved as an MP4, so it opens on Windows, Android and the web too.

MOV files from iPhone and Mac

Apple devices record video as MOV, a QuickTime file. Since iOS 11, iPhones use the efficient HEVC codec by default, but they also record at high bitrates and often in 4K at 30 or 60 frames per second. A single minute can easily take 150–400 MB.

Compressing a MOV re-encodes it to H.264 at a sensible bitrate and saves it as an MP4. The picture stays clear on phones and laptops, while the file becomes a fraction of its original size.

Smaller and more compatible

MOV files with HEVC video sometimes refuse to play on Windows PCs, older Android phones, smart TVs or in web forms that only accept MP4. Converting while you compress solves both problems in one step:

  • Share in chats without the app recompressing your video into a blurry copy.
  • Attach to emails that cap attachments at 20–25 MB.
  • Upload to websites that only accept MP4.

Keep the quality where it matters

For iPhone videos that will be watched on a phone, 720p is usually indistinguishable from 4K and dramatically smaller. Choose it under Advanced settings → Resolution. For videos you might edit or show on a TV later, choose Original there and use Recommended mode. The default is 1080p.

If your MOV was recorded at 60 frames per second and contains little fast motion, setting the frame rate to 30 saves extra space without a visible difference.

Private by design

Home videos are personal. VideosCompressor compresses your MOV files in your browser using your own device, so nothing is uploaded, and location data is removed by default. If you'd rather use Apple's built-in tools, our guides for iPhone and Mac walk you through them.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MOV file?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime video format. iPhones, iPads, Macs and many cameras save videos as MOV. Inside, the video is usually encoded with HEVC (H.265) or H.264.

Why is my compressed MOV saved as MP4?

MP4 with H.264 is understood by practically every device, app and website, while MOV files with HEVC video don't always play on Windows PCs, older Android phones or in some browsers. Saving as MP4 makes your video smaller and easier to share at the same time.

Can I compress iPhone HEVC videos in any browser?

Safari and most browsers on recent Macs, iPhones and Windows PCs with hardware support can read HEVC. If your browser can't, the compressor switches automatically to its compatibility engine, which is slower but works on most systems.

Does compressing a MOV keep the orientation?

Yes. Portrait videos stay portrait. The rotation stored in the MOV is applied to the picture itself, so the MP4 looks right in every player.

Will the date and location of my video be kept?

By default, metadata such as the recording location and device is removed for privacy. Untick "Remove metadata" in the advanced settings to keep it.
