How to Send Large Videos on WhatsApp
WhatsApp makes sharing videos easy, but large videos take ages to send and often arrive blurry. Here's how to send big videos quickly while keeping them sharp.
Two ways to send a video on WhatsApp
When you send a video, WhatsApp treats it in one of two ways:
As media (choosing it from the gallery or camera):
- It plays straight in the chat.
- WhatsApp compresses it to save data, which can soften the picture.
- Long videos may need to be trimmed.
As a document (using the attach menu's Document option):
- The file is sent unchanged, at full quality.
- WhatsApp's help pages give a maximum document size of 2 GB.
- The recipient must download the file before they can play it.
Neither option is perfect: media is convenient but blurry, documents are sharp but heavy. Compressing the video yourself first gives you the best of both.
Why compress before sending?
A one-minute video from a modern phone can be 100–200 MB. Sending it as a document means a long upload for you and a long download for everyone who receives it. Sending it as media means WhatsApp decides how to compress it.
If you compress it yourself to a clean 720p MP4, the same minute is usually 10–15 MB:
- It sends in seconds, even on mobile data.
- It looks sharp on phone screens.
- It doesn't fill up the recipient's storage.
How to compress a video for WhatsApp
- On your phone, open the WhatsApp video compressor in your browser. The WhatsApp preset is already selected.
- Tap Choose videos and pick the video.
- Tap Compress video, and keep the screen on until it's done.
- Tap Download. On iPhone, save it to Photos from the Files app; on Android, it appears in your gallery or Downloads.
- In WhatsApp, send the compressed video, as media for convenience or as a document for no further compression.
Sending in HD
Recent versions of WhatsApp show an HD option when you send a video as media. It keeps a higher quality than the standard setting, but the video is still compressed by WhatsApp and is larger to send. A video you've compressed yourself to 720p is usually the best balance.
Very long videos
For recordings of several minutes or more:
- Trim to the part that matters first; it's the easiest way to save space.
- Use Target file size with a size you're happy to send, for example 50 MB.
- Send as a document so WhatsApp doesn't recompress it.
WhatsApp on a computer
WhatsApp Web and the desktop app work the same way: drag a video into the chat to send it as media, or use the attach menu to send it as a document. You can compress the video in the same browser first with the Video Compressor.
Common problems
- "The file you tried to send is too large." Compress the video or send it as a document.
- The video looks blurry for the recipient. WhatsApp compressed it as media. Compress it yourself to 720p and resend, or send it as a document.
- It takes forever to send. Large files over mobile data are slow. A compressed 720p video is many times smaller.
Summary
- Media is convenient but recompressed; documents are sent unchanged, up to 2 GB.
- Compress to 720p yourself for sharp, fast-sending videos.
- Trim long videos first.
